A kayak launch could be in the works for Linwood Park in Caledonia. The local company, 5Kevents.org who orchestrates an annual kayaking & canoe trip on the Root River wants to make the river more accessible to the public. The Root River winds through Caledonia for about 15 miles and is an absolutely beautiful experience for those who can enjoy it. Unfortunately it is almost impossible for elderly and people with disabilities to do that without an access point. We want to change that so everyone can enjoy this river for years to come.
5Kevents.org is organizing the fund raising effort to coincide with the annual Root River Paddle Challenge. Patrick Flynn, co-owner of 5Kevents.org says, "We believe that the kayak launch is not only going to bring people together but get people outdoors and hopefully off their phones and talking to each other. Between Linwood Park and HorolickDam people can experience this beautiful natural resource along with rapids and wildlife that include deer, beavers, eagles and numerous other experiences that most of us travel many miles to see. We have it all here in our backyard, unfortunately it is almost impossible to access".
5Kevents.org's goal is to raise up to $25,000 for the project. UPDATE: OUR GOAL to reach $25K has been reduced by $12,500 with a matching grant form the state of wisconsin which will allow a handicap accessible launch!
The fundraiser will be a year long event with hopes that installation can be completed in 2018, the 6th anniversary of the Paddle Challenge. Design options will be submitted to the Village of Caledonia based on actual funds raised however the organization's ultimate goal is to build a handicap accessible launch and take out for all to enjoy. Ideally the organization would like to see a second launch at Johnson Park or 4 mile road so participants can either avoid the rapids if they desire or offer a shorter trip. Presently the group coordinates an 8 mile trip from Linwood to Horlick Dam. That is the nearest take out but is not handicap accessible and is a 3 hour trip in most conditions. Organizers say its one important step toward creating Caledonia's outdoor destination economy.
Help 5Kevents.org and have some fun! 100 of funds donated go directly to the purchase and installation of the launch. Funds are budgeted to breakdown as follows: 80% towards the purchase and installation and the balance (20%) of proceeds are retained for advertising, to offset event costs, offset merchant/credit card fees and administration.
